2008: Our Year in Review
Though anything dealing with the economy stole many of this year's headlines, plenty did happen in tech. Here's a look at the stories and topics you wanted to read about in 2008, including the best free software and the BlackBerry Storm review.

The Best End-of-Year Electronics Sales
You shopped 'til you dropped to get everything on your list in time for the holidays. But now is the time to get what you really want; these 10 retailers are offering up to 90 percent off of HDTVs, digital cameras, and more.

Dell's Kodak-Inspired Photo AIO
Designed as a home printer with an emphasis on photos, the Dell P703w All-In-One Wireless Photo Printer prints photos at fast speeds and reasonably high quality. Get the picture in our full review.

LG Announces 480-Hz LCD TV Panel for 2009
The Trumotion 480Hz is a first for the industry, and the technology should display video four times as smoothly as today's 120-Hz LCD TVs. LG's new display also can make dark images even darker and bright images brighter by turning off the backlight for longer periods, essentially dimming the display. Read more in our report.

Super-Size Your LCD Monitor
The Westinghouse L2610NW is not the most entertainment-friendly monitor around, but it gives you plenty of screen real estate at a reasonable price. Find out more in our hands-on review.

AppScout: Smule Debuts Zephyr iPhone App
Smule, the company behind the Ocarina--the Editors' Choice-winning musical instrument iPhone app, just introduced a new self-expression program called Zephyr. Essentially, Zephyr lets iPhone owners write or draw on a snow-covered screen. While this is happening, the app senses tilts and touches and responds with wind sounds, in an attempt to create a complete audio-visual "story." Learn more on AppScout.com.

Gearlog: Nextar Launches Bluetooth Car Kits
Nextar has announced the NXBT-001 and NXBT-002, two solar Bluetooth hands-free car kits designed for use when clipped to a sun visor. They recharge in standby mode without having to plug them into a DC power socket. Visit Gearlog.com for all the details.

White Paper - Virtualization from the Datacenter to the Desktop

Virtualization has gained much attention across organizations looking to address
these challenges, improving the efficiency of their IT operations and enhancing
their responsiveness to changing conditions. Originally focused on consolidating
resources in the data center, virtualization now has applications across the IT
spectrum, driving down costs and improving agility.

This paper looks at the role virtualization should take in an optimized IT
infrastructure, and presents a set of principles and best practices to help you
build a comprehensive virtualization strategy for your organization.

White Paper - Quick Migration with Hyper-V

In this white paper, we begin with an introduction to quick migration and the Hyper-V technology, and then describe how to apply quick migration to enhance the availability of services. We explore how you can prepare for planned downtime by using quick migration to save the state of a running virtual machine, move the storage connectivity from one physical server to another, and then restore the virtual machine (for unplanned downtime, the virtual machine is failed over automatically and the state is not saved).

We examine a specific scenario, assuming that Windows Server® 2008 Enterprise or Windows Server® 2008 Datacenter is already installed. We explain how to set up the failover clustering service, how to configure Hyper-V, and how to use quick migration to fail over a workload and maintain services.

I read with interest about a plan currently proposed by the Australian government. If they decide to go through with it, the government will put in place an Internet filter that is expected to block hundreds of illegal websites. While it would seem that blocking what are already illegal sites isn't a big deal, I'm pretty sure they'll have a hard time succeeding.

Microsoft and Google execs donate $450,000 to the Obama inauguration

When President-elect Obama is inaugurated in the next few weeks, he'll have current and former Microsoft executives and their wives to thank for the bash --- they've donated in excess of $300,000. Google execs have dug deep into their pockets as well, and have given $150,000. I've got the list of donors and details in my blog.

Google's woes extend to Microsoft's backyard

Google's attempt to make a big move into Microsoft's backyard appear to be failing --- because of Google's economic woes, the company has been forced to try and sublease one entire building and part of another in its Kirkland, Washington campus, just up the street from Microsoft headquarters.

Google Apps: Still Second Banana to Microsoft Office

Critics, including me, have berated Microsoft for being slow to move Office to the Web. But the truth is, Google Apps is so far behind Microsoft Office that when Microsoft launches a Web-based version of Office later this year, Google Apps still won't be a blip on the radar

Feature: The Weirdest Tech of 2008
What do pig-shaped iPod docks, beef iPod cases, and a Wi-Fi detecting T-shirt have in common? They're all oddities that help make up our weirdest tech of 2008 list.

Dvorak: Retro Computing and the Cloud
Back in the '90s, AOL started the cloud computing trend. Now people trust cloud computing even when they shouldn't. John C. Dvorak tackles what has happened in this arena and speculates whether cloud computing is actually a backward step.

News: Microsoft Applies to Patent Pay-as-You-Go Computing
Microsoft has applied for a patent that would allow the company to sell low-cost computers that make users pay to use software services. One example would make users pay $1 per hour to use Microsoft Word or Excel. Read the full scoop at PCMag.com.

Gearlog: LG's Connected Blu-ray Players Add CinemaNow and YouTube
We already knew that LG's online-connected Blu-ray players had access to Netflix, but now the company has set up partnerships with CinemaNow and YouTube, so you can bring more big-name and original content directly to your TV.

AppScout: SlingPlayer Mobile Comes to the BlackBerry
Reviewer Zach Honig checks out SlingPlayer Mobile on the BlackBerry Bold. The result is a fairly good choice for mobile TV viewing.

Security Watch: Bootleg Windows 7 Has Serious Vulnerabilities
Windows 7 isn't publicly available, but a version of the new Microsoft OS is floating around on Torrent sites. We advise you to be careful, because the bootleg beta can't be updated properly, a weakness exposes computers to vulnerabilities.

PCMag.com Discussions
Give us your thoughts on the following topics:

Retro Computing and the Cloud
Dvorak's aforementioned article has started a discussion about whether cloud computing is really all that great. Do you think Google Docs is the way of the future?

Activists Say Facebook Breast-Feeding Ban Is Unfair
Facebook recently took down photos of breast-feeding mothers and in response, activists starting complaining about the company's policies. Do you think Facebook made the right decision, or do the activists have a point?

Amazon Reports Bright Shopping Season
Big retailers like Best Buy and Target have been hurting this holiday season, but somehow Amazon is alive and well. Are major retailers losing a lot of ground to online retailers? Will online retailers end up better after the recession?
