DVD Drive Problems
So I bought a new computer a couple months ago.  The DVD drive worked fine when I got it.  Now, it will not write, boot, or read from the CD.It will read and boot from the DVD.I have tried different burning programs (Roxio, Imgburn, ISO recorder), but they still don’t work.

All of the programs act as if they are writing to the media, but when I read the DVD it is blank, and when I read from the CD, it will not open in Windows Explorer.

I don't think it is me messing up, because I used it to burn DVDs and CDs all the time. I have changed which SATA port it is plugged into, uninstalled and reinstalled it, and updated drivers.  Still no avail.  Read this story

Will My Device Work with Windows 7?; The Ultimate iPhone Home Screens; The Googleplex: Everything You've Heard Is True

If you are having trouble viewing this message, please click here.

Important Stories and More from Ziff Davis
    By Lance Ulanoff
   March 31, 2009 Volume 5, Number 250
Will My Device Work with Windows 7?
As we learned with the release of Windows Vista a few years ago, there is perhaps no more important question than “Will it work with my devices?” The early days of Vista were filled with unfortunate discoveries: too many of people’s legacy devices simply didn’t work. Windows 7 offers the promise of doing things differently. The reality? PCMag takes an in-depth-look at device support in Microsoft’s next major operating system release.
The Ultimate iPhone Home Screens
Apple’s AppStore is full of—I’m not exaggerating here—thousands of different apps. It’s hard to know where to begin, or which apps might fit your lifestyle. Some folks at PCMag had an interesting idea: What if we created the ultimate iPhone screens for four archetypes: Travelers, TV/Film junkies, Sports and Bloggers. Figure out which one you are and try recreating these screens on your own iPhone. I bet you’ll like the final result.
Our Favorite Mobile Games
Speaking of iPhone apps, obviously people were playing mobile games long before the iPhone hit the public stage—long enough in fact that many people have their favorite casual games. Here’s a look at the PCMag staff’s all-time faves. I’m not a big-time gamer, but I do have one somewhat boring entry. Follow the link to find out what it is.
The Promise of GPU Computing
A revolution is coming. That mild-mannered graphics GPU (the one on your graphics card) is finally ready to help shoulder the burden of general computing tasks. Using the GPU for general computing goes by a number of different names, including CUDA and GP-GPU, and until recently it’s been more a concept than a reality. According to Forward Thinking blogger Michael J. Miller, however, the tools and apps are now ready that will let you combine the power of your GPU and CPU to blast through a variety of tasks. Read Miller’s report for all the details.
Dropbox Makes File Syncing Easy
Lately, I’ve been reading a bunch of reviews about online synchronization tools, but the best of them—meaning the best service—turned out to be this one: Dropbox. It’s the most efficient, effortless, and elegant sync service we've seen here at PCMag, and it has won our coveted Editors' Choice award.
Apple's 8-Core Dream Workstation
Apple’s latest workstation may look almost exactly the same as the previous generation, but this aluminum computer houses eight cores of raw computing power. Read the review to find out what else Apple’s latest workhorse is also packing.
The Googleplex: Everything You've Heard Is True
Going to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, is, as one Twitter poster put it to me, a lot like visiting Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for Geeks. Read all about the one-of-a-kind vibe I found when I visited Google a couple of weeks ago, and don’t forget to check out the slideshow.
Picture Highlights from GDC
Couldn’t make it to this year’s Games Developer’s Conference? Don’t feel bad; neither did I. The good news is that ExtremeTech sent a couple of envoys and brought back a truly cool slideshow, full of all the great gaming goodness we both missed.
How To: Free E-Books for the Kindle 2
Whether you've bought a Amazon Kindle 2 or are just thinking about buying one, I’m sure you’ll be glad to hear that there are free e-books available and that, yes, you can get them onto your Kindle. You simply have to read this story and follow the instructions contained within.
Premium Download: Vista Logon Changer
If you’ve been running Windows Vista for any length of time, then you’ve probably grown pretty tired of the log-on screen, background image and start-up sound. If so, you’ll appreciate PCMag’s latest premium (it costs $7.95) utility, Vista Logon Changer. It lets you give Vista your own personal touch. Download it today.
Don't Shoot in Auto
Blogger Geoff Fox has been a photographer for a long time, and though he loves digital photography he is not a big fan of using all the auto-features available. Having done a good bit of analog photography in my day, I get this, and I do sometimes turn off auto on my D-SLR and fiddle with shutter speed and aperture. Fox says this is a good thing. In this series of posts, he outlines how you can manipulate white balance, ISO, and aperture settings to get some unbelievable shots.
Report: OnStar Considering Twitter App for Your Car
I love Tweeting, but I seriously wonder if this is a good idea.
