Hands On with Amazon’s New Kindle DX
Yesterday Amazon announced the Kindle DX: a larger Kindle that's newspaper-, magazine-, and, especially, textbook-friendly. Reviews czar Dan Costa and I were at the event. I collected the live blog and Dan did a hands-on. Early impression: The DX’s big screen makes the original one look tiny. Costa has more insights in his preview. My column tries to put it all in perspective
ExtremeTech's Case Mod Contest Sponsored by Newegg

How an iPad Could Kill the Kindle
Mobile Analyst Sascha Segan is certainly not the only one predicting the demise of the Amazon Kindle DX before it even ships to customers. He, like others, sees a dark shadow cast over the Kindle DX by Apple's ambitions, and thinks the unknown hardware Apple may release next month could be a stake through the heart of Amazon’s infant digital-book hardware business. Oddly, though, Segan does not think Amazon will be upset if Apple introduces a large format iPod-touch with cellular capability. I know Apple is releasing some sort of new device next month, but I’m not sure this is it. Even if it is, I bet Sascha is wrong. Read the post and decide for yourself.
Dvorak: Why Tech Today is Boring
Columnist John C. Dvorak has decided to cry in his milk. Poor him: The industry is dull. Oh well. Of course, he’s as wrong as he can be. I will give him credit for picking out for events that have helped shape the last nine years in tech, but I can’t agree that they’ve somehow made the era that brought us the iPod, Xbox, Kindle, and HDTVs boring. See if you agree with me that Dvorak is mistaken.
The Best Small-Business Database
Businesses run best when they’re organized. Organized businesses run even better when then have a database behind them. If you want to keep track of products, people, and information, the small-biz database is the best way to go. If you’re like me, though, the word “database” terrifies you. It shouldn’t, especially not with products like the highly effective and easy-to-use FileMaker Pro 10 around. PCMag has a hands-on review that proves this point.
Craigslist: Seller Beware
I think that the global and largely-free, classified, ad service craigslist is a phenomenal platform for buying and selling stuff, finding jobs, and getting that apartment in Paris. However, it’s not perfect, and for unsuspecting users it can turn into a deep well of pain. I almost fell into one, but caught myself just in time. Read my tale if you want to use craigslist safely.
Windows 7 RC is Now Available to All
You can try out the Windows 7 Release Candidate today. Just remember that it won’t work forever, and this is still beta code. That said. I’m running it problem free right now. Read the story for more details on how to get your hands on the new OS.

Review Roundup: Blu-ray and DVD Software Players
Downloading movies and ripped content are fun, but the ultimate viewing experience is, for now, 1080p high-def content that you’ll find on Blu-ray discs. If you want to watch them on your PC or via your PC connected to your TV, you’re gonna need effective, non-stuttering player software. ExtremeTech has you covered. ET analysts looked at the four leading player applications and tell you which one is right for you.
