Information Systems Audit: The Basics
In the early days of computers, many people were suspicious of their ability to
replace human beings performing complex tasks. The first business software
applications were mostly in the domain of finance and accounting. The numbers
from paper statements and receipts were entered into the computer, which would
perform calculations and create reports. Computers were audited using sampling
techniques. An auditor would collect the original paper statements and receipts,
manually perform the calculations used to create each report, and compare the
results of the manual calculation with those generated by the computer. In the
early days, accountants would often find programming errors, and these were
computer audit findings.

13,000 offer up DNA to put their genomes online
The Personal Genome Project, which hopes to collect genetic information from
100,000 volunteers and publish it online, said 13,000 people have already
offered up material. And storage vendors such as Isilon, Google and Amazon are
looking to take part.

Microsoft Exchange Best Practices
With Exchange 2007, Microsoft continues to improve the product and push the
limits of existing server and storage devices. The most critical component of an
Exchange deployment is the storage subsystem where the data is held. Download
this white paper to learn best practices in storage sizing and deployment.

Start-up costs slow spread of de-duplication
At several companies, data de-duplication, or single-instance storage,
technology has demonstrated that it can cut long-term costs and improve disaster
recovery. Yet only about 30% of companies worldwide have deployed some form of
it to date.

Bigger Savings through Greater Server Virtualization
As successful as virtualization has been in most implementations, IT managers
today are seeking an even more rapid ROI and greater cost savings. Is this even
possible? The answer surprisingly is 'yes' – provided you address the various
management challenges that arise as more of the IT infrastructure is
virtualized.

What the heck!?
I was called to one of our remote sites the other day because the computer had
entered into one of those windows endless reboot cycles. You know the one: it
starts up, shows the windows logo and the loading bar, then quickly blue screens
and reboots to do it all over again ...
