Android to go beyond phones to a range of personal devices

The Android mobile platform is destined to be part of many other devices, and a
San Jose provider of embedded Linux products will take that a step further by
providing an Android-ready Linux kernel for chips to be used in those devices.

Apple to netbooks: Drop dead

As someone who's fascinated by the idea of Apple doing some sort of small device
-- not necessarily a netbook, but something bigger than an iPod touch and
smaller than a MacBook -- I pay close attention to what Apple says about the
whole netbook market.

BlackBerry tips: Delete carrier crapware, icons

Every so often, wireless carriers take it upon themselves to push out their own
branded, or at least sanctioned, applications and services to BlackBerry users
in the form of "service book" updates -- regardless of whether or not said users
actually want them. AT&T seems to be particularly fond of the practice, and this
weekend it not only pushed out a dozen or so new link-icons to its BlackBerry
customers' devices, but also delivered a new version of its own "app store,"
Media Mall 2.0.

Palm Centro breaks ex-iPhone user out of jail

The iPhone bandwagon is now more like a cruise ship: AT&T reported Wednesday
that 1.6 million people signed up for iPhone service in the first quarter. As an
ex-iPhone user, I wish them luck, but I'm not going back anytime soon.

Microsoft executive sees rise of tablets, 'room computer'

Technology that changes how people give commands to computers could make
touch-based PCs more popular and transform the traditional desktop into a "room
computer" in coming years, a Microsoft executive said.

Laptops bring youth off the streets

Laptops can be easily taken for granted by those who have direct access to them,
but the devices are a salvation for some at-risk teenagers and young adults
caught up in gang and drug-related activity in San Francisco.

SaaS Secures in Uncertain Times
In a tight economy, IT managers are faced with more challenges than ever.
Budgets are shrinking, Web and email threats are increasing, and administrators
are tasked with providing more support with fewer people. As organizations
rethink how they manage critical functions like Web and email security, industry
experts are recommending the software-as-a-service (SaaS) model.
