How to recycle your Mac
When your Mac is no longer the shiny new kid on the block, there's no shortage
of ways to extend its useful life. An old Mac can work as a recipe-storage
library, for instance, and that antique iBook can be a backup drive.

Apple grounds Steve Jobs' jet
Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who's been on medical leave since January, dramatically
curtailed company-funded travel in the past six months and has not used his
personal plane at all for Apple business this year, according to a filing with
the SEC.

Mac mini media center: Is it worth it?
Throughout the week I've documented my experience turning Apple's US$599 Mac
mini into a complete media server--from upgrading the hardware, to setting up
Front Row, to configuring the Mac to access local, networked, and Internet
media; to controlling the works from a prone position. It's now time to turn to
The Big Picture. Is it worth the trouble? How family-friendly is the setup? And
how does it compare to Apple's media-centric option, the Apple TV?

Canonical offer Linux distribution for netbooks
Canonical released a Linux distribution optimized for netbooks with features to
improve battery life and rapidly access programs.

Preston Gralla: Will Apple and Google go to war over netbooks?
With a Google Android notebook already spotted in the wild and rumors heating up
about an Apple netbook, Microsoft's two biggest competitors may soon go head to
head with one another in the increasingly crowded netbook market. The winner?
Consumers, who can expect lower prices, more features, and greater choice.

Seth Weintraub: Against harsh economy, Apple's ship keeps sailing
We are in the middle of the worst recession in most of our lifetimes. It is
cutting across all industries. Apple makes premium products that cost more than
its competitors across the line. How do they continue to do so well?
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/4900216/283856142/186028/0/
Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols: Get your software into Linux the easy way
The Linux Foundation and openSUSE recently joined forces to make it easy for any
developer to get any program into any version of Linux.

Ken Mingis: How to make a MacBook zippy -- just add an SSD
I recently inherited a base model $1,299 MacBook and wanted to make it a little
snappier for day-to-day operations. So I snagged an OCZ SSD and swapped it in
for the stock drive. Color me happy.

Seth Weintraub: Verizon said to be pursuing Apple's iPhone (again)
USA Today's post today is the latest in a series of reports that Verizon is
clamoring for the iPhone. According to "people familiar with the situation",
Verizon and Apple have been having high level talks throughout the year and even
into last year. Will we see a Verizon iPhone soon?

Seth Weintraub: Apple posts good quarter, beats expectations
Although Mac sales were off 3% year over year, Apple did incredibly well
otherwise including quarterly iPhone unit sales of 3.79 million, up 123 percent
from the year-ago-quarter.

Apple sells fewer Macs, but boosts revenues with iPhone, iPod Touch
Apple Inc. today announced that Mac sales fell last quarter, the first time in
nearly six years the company has reported a year-to-year drop-off in Mac sales.
But even in a down economy, revenues climbed 9% and profits were up 15%.

SHARK BAIT OF THE DAY

Sometimes, they just don't listen...
I have a manager that requested network accounts for two of his sales guys. Not
really a problem, except these two guys are really old-school, and they have had
network accounts set up for them multiple times in the past. Every time, they
stop logging in to their computers, and 90 days later, their accounts are
deleted due to inactivity ...
