The Best Eco-Friendly Tech
A couple of years ago a bunch of PCMaggers got together and decided that we wanted to test products for their “greenness.” The hope was to have a methodology in place in time for our one and only Green Issue. Two years later, we’re testing desktops, laptops, HDTVs, and numerous other devices to see how energy-efficient they are and how well they conform to various environmental standards. The best of the bunch get our “Green Tech Approved” award. In honor of yesterday’s Earth Day, PCMag pulled together a roundup of the latest winners; lots of very, very good products in there.

Netbooks: The New Norm for Laptops
I know I railed against netbooks as a marketing ploy, but that doesn’t diminish the very real impact they’ve had on the computing market today and will have in the future. In fact, netbooks have so altered consumer expectations, it’s unlikely things will ever be the same again. Is this a bad thing? I lay it all out in my latest column.
Microsoft Bob Rides Again
I love John C. Dvorak. He’s always interesting and funny. Unfortunately, he’s sometimes dead wrong. This is one of those instances. He slams Office 2007 for being easier to use than previous versions and seems to think that better, more usable interfaces that do not scare technophobes are the wrong way to go. He even compares Microsoft’s current plans for Office and Windows 7 to the huge misfire known as “Bob.” Ridiculous. You better read this one and help set Dvorak straight in the forums.
Pleo, Ugobe Go the Way of the Dinosaurs
The world of robots was pretty quiet, until the last couple of weeks. First, I get to run around in a pair of robotic legs. This week, Pleo manufacturer Ugobe filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy (that’s the bad kind) and now Carnegie Mellon is naming the latest Robot Hall of Fame inductees. It’s enough to make a robot fan’s head spin. Follow the links for my latest reports.
How the Smart Device Will Supplant the PC
Seriously, this column should have been called “Everything is Becoming Free.” Smart Device Central Editor Jamie Lendino points to the free trend in as many as five categories as the driving force for portable smart devices moving to the center of the computing universe. It’s an interesting idea.
OCZ Neutrino "DIY" Netbook Reviewed
Let’s get this straight, folks: There really is no such thing as a do-it-yourself laptop. So while the OCZ pitches its netbook as DIY, it qualifies only in the most limited sense. Even so, the claim was worth putting to the test, and ExtremeTech’s analysts were the perfect guys to do it.

Three Quiet PC Cases
If you really want to build something, try making your own PC. The first ingredient? No, not a motherboard. You need the right case. How about an ultraquiet one? ET tested three to see which one fills the bill.
