IT Blogwatch: Apple: chipping away at its suppliers
In a special IT Blogwatch Extra, Apple hires an impressive roster of chip
designers; and Richi Jennings watches bloggers ask, "Why?" Not to mention the
Free Hugs prank...

Preston Gralla: Five reasons you won't want Windows 7's XP Mode
Windows 7 will feature a Windows XP mode that will allow applications to run in
an XP virtual box so they will run without problems, but will appear as if
they're running natively on Windows 7. It's a great tool for businesses and may
end up killing Windows XP. But there are five reasons that it's not ideal for
consumers.

Seth H. Weintraub: Nokia N810 Tablet, now $220 with Google Android
Although that little Android Netbook I pointed out to you last week will be the
first netbook-type device to have Android running on it, you can get a better
device, cheaper right now. For $220 (on sale at Amazon) you can get the Nokia
N810. With a little effort, you can run Android on it.

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols: Has the GPL out-lived its usefulness?
Eric S. Raymond, who helped coin the phrase 'open source,' thinks that the "GPL
is probably doing us more harm than good." What do you think?

Managing Spend on Information Security and Audit for Better Results
The benchmarks conducted by the IT Policy Compliance Group show almost all
organizations have financial incentives exceeding 100 percent to make
improvements to reduce financial risk from data loss, downtime and regulatory
audit. This report includes findings covering the principal operational
outcomes being experienced by organizations, financial risks, losses and
returns, and the practices making the most difference to control risks, reduce
costs, and improve results.

IT Blogwatch: DoJ reads Google the rule book
In Thursday's IT Blogwatch, Richi Jennings wonders if the U.S. Dept. of Justice
will scupper Google's plans for world domination, at least in books. Not to
mention another cut-to-the-chase moment from Jason DeFillippo...

Jaikumar Vijayan: Can the feds buy their way to better cyber security?
The federal government buys more than $70 billion worth of IT products every
year. Should they be using their purchasing clout to force vendors to make
products safer?

Preston Gralla: Microsoft: We'll ship Windows 7 in 2009
As I've been saying for a long time, Windows 7 will ship in 2009, not 2010, most
likely by the holiday season. Microsoft Senior Vice President Bill Veghte, the
honcho in charge of Microsoft's Windows business, all but confirmed that in a
statement.

Shark Tank: At least he asked
Malware from the Web is slowly becoming a problem where this support pilot fish
works -- and even though all desktops are locked down, maybe a little more user
awareness is in order.

the break room and around the floor, so I've formed friendships with some of
