The Unofficial Gmail User's Guide Google’s Gmail application may seem like a relatively simple e-mail service that poses no threat to Outlooks dominance, but it’s not and it does. Every day Google Labs adds features (which Google is happy to tear down if they're not well received). And as I learned when I visited Google earlier this year, Google has big plans for this and other cloud-based apps. In other words, you need to know more about Gmail. This guide details a ton of amazing stuff you can do with it. I bet most of it is new to you. ADVERTISEMENT | Diary of a Linux Virgin I won’t lie to you, I am not a Linux convert, but now that I’ve installed the open-source OS and spent some real quality time with it, I see it in a whole new light. If you’re thinking about taking the leap, my trial by fire with the Linux distro Ubuntu is a must-read. Twitter Mania Has Got to Stop I think columnist John C. Dvorak and I are on the same page when it comes to Twitter, though the way he attacks the issue is, honestly, hilarious. Whether you love the microblogging service or hate it, you’ll want to read this column. Dvorak takes on the celebs who are abusing Twitter and makes us all laugh. Preview: Acer AspireRevo Graphics chip manufacturer nVidia is rolling out its own chipset support for Intel CPUs. Called ION, the GeForce 9400M chipset works with Intel’s popular Atom processor. Now we’re seeing the first implementation in the Acer AspireRevo nettop. A nettop is like a netbook—a relatively small, midlevel-performing PC that should cost less than $400. The engineering sample PCMag tested will likely run just $299 and, according to early results, actually does fairly well on relatively intensive production task. Want to keep an eye on this platform and future developments? Start by reading this preview. Review: Dell Studio One 19 I really love the all-in-one PC trend. It started ages ago with the "screen-only" iMac (yes, there were others, but none made such a big impact) and has continued with HP, Gateway, and Dell. Most are lovely, and with the introduction of touch screens—a real bonus—I may even get one for my kitchen. Still, not all all-in-ones are made alike, and while PCMag likes the new touch-screen Dell Studio One 19, it’s not quite the home run it could have been. Learn all the pluses and minuses in this report. Hands On with Office 2007 SP2 Microsoft may had a difficult time convincing people that Windows Vista is the OS they want, but the road has been far smoother when it comes to adoption—dare I say full embrace?—of Microsoft Outlook 2007. Released at the same time, its changes were vast, but somehow more manageable for the majority of users. Now the company, in no rush to deliver Office 10, is rolling out Service Pack 2 for the productivity suite. PCMag has a hands-on report. The Phenom X4 955 Black Edition--AMD Reaches Higher ExtremeTech’s analysts got their hands on an unlocked version of AMD’s top-of-the-line processor, the X4 955 Black Edition, and pitted it against Intel’s Core 2 Quad CPU. The results are interesting, though not entirely surprising. The Windows 7 Killer Rig: Prepping the Case It’s time for Part II of ExtremeTech Editor Loyd Case’s Windows 7 system build. This time he focuses on modifying his Antec P193 case. Don't Shoot in Auto--Macromania Macro shooting with a digital camera is pretty easy. You switch to the icon that looks like a flower, get close and shoot. However, frequent blogger Geoff Fox says there are limits to what you can do with the presets. He, as always, has the answer on how to go über-macro. Read Fox’s latest post for details. Utility Download: Startup Cop Pro 4 Startup Cop Pro is, by far, my favorite PCMag Utility. Part of the reason I love it so much is that it’s perfect for me, someone who loads so many apps and doodads onto his PC that his Windows startup process becomes an aggravating waiting game. Startup Cop returns control of your PC to you. This tenth-anniversary edition is faster than version 3 and supports XP, Vista, and even Windows 7 beta. It’s probably the best $7.95 investment you’ll make this year. RealDVD Battles for Life Want to know why you do not own a box that lets you rip and store your own DVD movies onto your PC? Then you better start following the fascinating legal drama currently playing out in a San Francisco courtroom. It’s RealNetworks versus the movie industry. For those who forgot, Real released RealDVD a year ago, a product that let you rip commercial DVDs to your PC. Real planned on making a standalone hardware product, too. Now the Real technology is off the market until the courts decides if Real was skirting copyright laws. Confused? Read all of News Editor Mark Hachman’s coverage from the trial and then reread my column from last year, when RealNetworks from shipped RealDVD. | SUBSCRIBE TO PC MAGAZINE DIGITAL TODAY!
