1. Swine Flu: To Fear is to Fail
Whenever a crisis unfolds -- and we've seen many in recent years -- the famous
line FDR delivered in his 1933 inaugural address comes to mind: "The only thing
we have to fear is, fear itself."
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/4919654/283856146/187079/0/
2. A couple of Twitter search services
Last week I offered anyone who might be interested a copy of the batch files and
other tools (cURL, grep, my nasty little program and the Excel spreadsheet) for
analyzing Twitter "Tweets" -- all you had to do was send an e-mail to
gearhead@gibbs.com with the subject "TA". I've had quite a few requests and you
will get the files in a few days -- the delay is because I found a bug in my
nasty little program and I haven't had time to fix it.

3. Build a better online persona: 4 steps
Social networks, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, have enabled everyone
to become instant publishers. As a result, the content attached to our names
will continue to shape perceptions of us both professionally and personally.
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/4919654/283856146/186741/0/
4. Reduce Your Mobile Phone Bill
I'm just taking a wild guess here, but I'll bet your monthly cell phone bill is
higher than you'd like it to be. If you use a smart phone, like a RIM BlackBerry
or Apple iPhone, you're particularly vulnerable to high monthly bills, what with
the data and text messaging plans. Even though you're locked into a contract
with your wireless provider, there are ways you can get your mobile phone bills
under control.

5. Yahoo extends YQL Web data query platform
Yahoo released on Wednesday an extension to its YQL platform for simplifying how
Web applications consume data.

6. Phishers hit Facebook with scam messages
Facebook users were hit with a phishing attack that tried to steal names and
passwords from users of the popular social network.

7. Adobe confirms PDF zero-day, urges users to kill JavaScript
Adobe Systems late Tuesday acknowledged that all versions of its popular PDF
software, including editions for Windows, the Mac and Linux, contain at least
one, and maybe two, critical vulnerabilities.
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/4919654/283856146/187084/0/
8. The Kilo-Day threat and mundane security
In the security business we spend a lot of time worrying about the "zero-day"
threat that appears out of nowhere and immediately starts attacking a hereto
unknown vulnerability. We imagine genius hackers probing software to discover
new and unique ways of attacking our systems. We worry about the
yet-undiscovered bugs that lie dormant in our operating systems. We worry so
much that we overlook the vulnerabilities we already know about. The ones that
have been hanging around on our systems, known but unaddressed, unpatched and
wide open. The kilo-day threat is the one that we've know about for 1,024+ days,
or roughly three years. While mundane and basic info-hygiene is boring it is the
best defense.

9. Antipiracy law fallout: Swedish ISP won't store IP addresses of users
Tele2, one of the top Internet service providers in Sweden, plans to stop
storing the IP addresses of customers in the wake of the Swedish government's
implementation of an antipiracy law targeting illegal file-sharers.
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/4919654/283856146/187086/0/
10. No jail time for Nugache worm creator
A 20-year-old man from Cheyenne, Wyoming, has been sentenced to five years'
probation for creating what researchers called one of the most sophisticated
botnet networks of hacked computers in recent years.
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/4919654/283856146/187087/0/
11. Microsoft doctors AutoRun in Windows 7 to stymie Conficker
Prompted by the spread of the Conficker worm through infected USB drives,
Microsoft will unveil changes in the public Windows 7 Release Candidate that are
designed to stymie such hacker strategies.
